| Why get my jewelry appraised?
There are many reasons for jewelry appraisals and value factors vary for a specific type of appraisal. It is very important to discuss this with your appraiser. For example...... The most common are: insurance appraisals ( insurance coverage), estate appraisals (settlements for distrubution of assets to heirs), liquidation appraisals for property settlements ( in the case of divorce), etc. Again discuss your needs with the appraiser. The purpose of the appraisal is to establish a value of the jewelry item(s) for... A. Insurance Coverage. This is a retail value (end user) based on what the item actually sold for in any give geographic area. Considerations are type of outlets where like kind would be offered.( i.e. upscale boutique, regional chain mall store, discount houses, etc.) The appraised value is the figuere by which your insurance company calculates your premiums. B. Asset Distribution/Estate Appraisal. This is an appraisal with values used to assit in distribution of assets to heirs, beneficiaries in wills, etc. Value is figured based on 'fair market value'. Basically the price at which a willing seller and a willing buyer would agree upon without being a forced sale. Plus many other types.... |

| Who is qualified to appraise my jewelry?
A gemologist. This individual has studied the science and technical aspects of gemstones from formation (natural and sythetic) through the processes of faceting the finished stone. Various types of instruments are used to identify gemstones and 'seperate' stones with similar characteristics. The gemologist should be an appraiser. This is someone who has studied appraisal theory, methodology and appraisal writing . An appraiser is someone who is able to evaluate your jewelry and complete research to apply a value to it for the appropriate market in which the appraisal is required. The appraiser should also have a complete understanding and a working knowledge of the various methods of manufacturing, reconstruction and repair of fine jewelry. Maintaining the value of your fine jewelry items requires quality repair and finishing techniques on your jewelry items when repair is needed. .Note: Being a jeweler or gemologist alone dosen't make one an appraiser. |

| What should my jewelry appraisal contain?
The biggest complaint insurance companies have about jewelry appraisals is "Most do not supply enough information about the item(s) being insured". We write appraisals according to the USPAP ( Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices) As a mimimum , formal appraisals or certificates of value should include: Date of valuation . Qualifications of the appraiser. Complete description of the items being appraised,(using complete discreptive language) Using standard industry terms and information on gemolological identification. (4Cs), Color grade, Carat weights, Clarity grades, Cut information (measurements of stones, proportions, depth, girdle info, crown angle, etc.). Metal types used, manufacturing methods and current condition. A statement of conclusions of dollar value reached with applicable qualifications or limitations on the conclusions, defining the market in which the appraisal is aimed, (i.e. insurance coverage, liquidation of estate, quicksale tax liquidation, etc.) Example; The value of the items is what the insurance companies use to calculate a premium for your coverage. A statement that the appraiser has personally examined the items that are the subject of the report, A statement as to the assupmtions and conditions to the appraisal, if any, and to the conclusions reached. Photograph of item(s) being appraised. .. .A Word of Caution... Read the document. (especially the preprinted cute bordered type... along the bottom of the page). If you read any text where the appraiser or signer of the document attempts to seperate himself/herself /establishment/store from any liability/responsibility of the documents content.... you should find another appraiser. What should you bring for you appraisal appointment. In addition to the item(s) you want appraised you should bring... 1. Any documentation of sale or reciepts. 2. Any previous apprasials, certificate of value, statements of value, etc. 3. Any documentation of insurance coverage (if already insured). 4. Of course the items you want appraised. . . |
